Radio is still the most effective mass medium in Africa. Poverty and illiteracy make the alternatives, such as television and newspapers, inaccessible to most Africans. Radio has huge power which explains why, even in countries where independent broadcasting has become a reality, the government has tended to retain control of state broadcasting.
